Statistics does not directly solve economic problems. It only helps in analysing data and understanding the causes of problems. Based on this analysis, economists and the government make policies to solve the problems effectively.

Statistics is of no use without data in Economics. The theory clearly explains that data is necessary for analysis. Without data, economists cannot study problems, find their causes, or make any policies to solve them.
2. Make a list of activities in a bus stand or a market place. How many of them are economic activities?
Solution – At a bus stand or market place, many different activities take place. Some common activities include buying tickets, selling goods, purchasing items, driving autos or buses, carrying luggage as a porter, and running small shops. According to the theory, economic activities are those activities that are done for earning money or monetary gain. So, activities like selling goods, driving a vehicle for passengers, working as a porter, or running a shop are economic activities because people earn income from them. On the other hand, some activities like waiting for a bus, talking with friends, or simply walking around are not economic activities because they do not involve earning money. Therefore, in a bus stand or market, there are both economic and non-economic activities. Most of the workers there are engaged in economic activities because they are trying to earn a living. This shows how daily life is closely connected with economic activities.
3. ‘The Government and policy makers use statistical data to formulate suitable policies of economic development’. Illustrate with two examples.
Solution – The government and policymakers use statistical data to understand economic problems and make suitable policies for development. According to the theory, data helps in analysing problems like poverty, unemployment, and population growth. For example, the government collects data about poverty levels in different regions. By analysing this data, it can understand how many people are poor and what factors are causing poverty, such as unemployment or low income. Based on this, policies like employment schemes or financial support programs can be introduced. Another example is population data. The government studies population growth and uses statistical tools to predict future trends. This helps in making policies like family planning programs to control population growth. Without statistics, it would be very difficult to make accurate decisions. Therefore, statistics plays an important role in helping the government plan and implement effective policies for economic development.
4. “You have unlimited wants and limited resources to satisfy them.” Explain this statement by giving two examples.
Solution – The statement that human wants are unlimited but resources are limited is a basic concept explained in the theory. Humans always want more goods and services to satisfy their needs, such as better food, clothes, education, and entertainment. However, the resources available to produce these goods, like money, land, labour, and time, are limited. For example, a student has limited pocket money but many things to buy, so they cannot purchase everything and must choose only the most important items. Another example is in agriculture, where resources like land and water are limited. These resources can be used to produce different crops, such as food crops or cash crops, but not all at the same time. Therefore, a choice must be made. This situation of limited resources and unlimited wants creates the problem of scarcity, which is the root of all economic problems. It forces individuals and society to make decisions and prioritize their needs.
5. How will you choose the wants to be satisfied?
Solution – According to the theory, since resources like income are limited and wants are unlimited, a person must make choices about which wants to satisfy. This decision is usually based on priority and importance. A consumer considers their income and the prices of goods before making a decision. They try to choose those goods that give them the maximum satisfaction. For example, if a person has limited money, they will first spend it on essential items like food and basic needs rather than luxury items. The theory explains that scarcity forces individuals to make such choices. The concept of “current prices” also plays an important role because if prices increase, a person may have to reduce their consumption or choose alternatives. Therefore, the process of choosing wants involves careful thinking about needs, available resources, and prices. This helps in making the best possible use of limited resources and achieving maximum satisfaction.
6. What are your reasons for studying Economics?
Solution – Economics is studied to understand how people deal with scarcity and make choices in their daily lives. According to the theory, Economics helps us understand economic activities such as consumption, production, and distribution. It explains how consumers decide what to buy, how producers decide what to produce, and how income is distributed among different people. It also helps us understand important problems like poverty, unemployment, and inequality. By studying Economics, we can analyse these problems and find possible solutions. The theory also highlights the role of statistics in Economics, which helps in collecting and analysing data for better decision-making. Additionally, Economics helps individuals plan their own lives by understanding how income, education, and opportunities are related. It also helps in understanding the impact of government policies. Therefore, studying Economics is important for both personal understanding and for contributing to the development of society.
7. Statistical methods are no substitute for common sense. Comment with examples from your daily life.
Solution – The theory explains that although Statistics is very useful, it cannot replace common sense. It gives an example of a family trying to cross a river based on the average depth of the river and their average height. Even though the average suggested it was safe, some members drowned because the actual depth at some points was greater. This shows that relying only on averages without thinking carefully can lead to wrong decisions. In daily life also, we can see such situations. For example, if the average marks of a class are high, it does not mean that every student has scored well. Some students may have scored very low marks. Similarly, average income does not show the true condition of all individuals in a society. Therefore, while Statistics helps in analysing data and making decisions, it must be used with proper understanding and common sense. Only then can correct conclusions be drawn and mistakes be avoided.
